Elon Musk Announces Successful Brain Chip Implant in Third Person
American billionaire and entrepreneur Elon Musk has announced the successful implantation of a Neuralink brain chip in a third individual, indicating plans to expand to 20 to 30 people by the end of 2025. This comes after Musk previously assured that human use of Neuralink’s brain chips would become commonplace in the future.
In an interview with Mark Penn, the marketing director at Stagwell, broadcasted on the social media platform X, Musk stated, “We now have three people with Neuralink chips, and all are working well. We expect to implant chips in 20-30 people this year.”
In August 2024,
Neuralink announced that the second participant in their brain chip trial would be capable of
creating 3D objects using only thought, aided by the implant. Fast forward to January 2024, Musk
revealed that the first human brain chip surgery was performed on a 29-year-old who had
become completely paralyzed due to a spinal injury.
Using Neuralink’s technology, a small device, akin to a watch battery, is implanted in the brain
area responsible for processing motor commands. From this device, fine wires extend, carrying
electrical contacts that capture signals from the patient’s brain. These brain commands are then
wirelessly transmitted to a computer application, allowing the chip’s user to control it through
“thinking.”
According to the company, this technology is designed to assist people who have lost the ability to
use their limbs. The advancements made by Neuralink could potentially revolutionize how we
interact with technology and assist in the recovery of motor functions for those with severe
impairments.
This ongoing development at Neuralink not only showcases the potential of brain-computer
interfaces but also underscores Elon Musk’s vision for a future where technology and human
biology converge to enhance human capabilities or restore lost functions.
