Iraq Plans to Provide New Aid to Lebanon
Iraq has announced its intention to offer new assistance to Lebanon, focusing on food and medical aid. Iraq’s Ministry of Commerce disclosed on Sunday that a delegation will soon visit Lebanon to coordinate these efforts.
According to the Iraqi News Agency (INA), early Sunday morning, Sttar Al-Jaberi, the Iraqi Deputy Minister of Commerce, stated, “An Iraqi delegation will visit our brotherly Lebanon in the coming days to discuss with Lebanese officials the possibility of Iraq participating in providing tangible aid to Lebanon.”
Al-Jaberi emphasized that under the direct supervision of Iraqi Prime Minister Mohammed Shia’ Al Sudani, the Iraqi government has taken urgent measures since the onset of hostilities in Lebanon and Gaza. These measures aim to support a reconstruction fund for Lebanon and Gaza, focusing on rebuilding what has been destroyed due to the aggression on Lebanon.
The Iraqi official highlighted that the Iraqi government has exempted retirees from contributions that government employees are making towards a significant support campaign aimed at aiding the Lebanese people with immediate food and medical assistance.
Moreover:
Al-Jaberi confirmed that the Iraqi Council of Ministers has decided to form a committee, led by him, including various government bodies, to oversee and expedite the provision of urgent aid to the Lebanese people. This initiative is being coordinated with the Lebanese government to establish operational mechanisms for delivering emergency, food, and medical aid, which began following the ceasefire announcement in Lebanon.
The ceasefire between Israel and Lebanon went into effect on November 27, as reported by
Lebanese media. With the ceasefire in place, Lebanese displaced persons have started returning
to their villages and cities in southern Lebanon. However, an Israeli military spokesperson
warned that the army remains deployed in its positions within southern Lebanon. The Israeli
military has also advised residents of southern Lebanon against moving to deserted villages,
promising to notify them of a “safe time” for their return.
