Trump Hints at Possible Extension for TikTok
On Saturday, U.S. President-elect Donald Trump suggested he would “most likely” grant the popular app TikTok an additional 90-day reprieve from a potential ban, following his inauguration on Monday. This statement comes amid heightened anticipation regarding the future of the app, which boasts 170 million American users, as the deadline for the ban looms on Sunday.
In an interview with NBC News, Trump remarked, “The 90-day extension is something that will be most likely done because it’s appropriate. If I decide to do that, I’ll probably announce it on Monday.”

Late on Friday, TikTok warned that it might have to shut down services in the U.S. starting Sunday unless President Joe Biden’s administration provides assurances to companies like Apple and Google that they will not face legal action once the ban takes effect.
Under a law passed last year and unanimously upheld by the Supreme Court on Friday, TikTok must sever its ties with its Chinese parent company, ByteDance, or cease operations in the United States to mitigate national security concerns.
The White House described TikTok’s threat to go dark as a “stunt” on Friday, emphasizing that the final decision would rest with Trump’s incoming administration, increasing the likelihood of the ban being implemented on Sunday. White House Press Secretary Karine Jean-Pierre stated, “We see no reason for TikTok or other companies to take any immediate steps in the coming days before Trump’s administration takes responsibility on Monday.”
TikTok has yet to comment on these recent White House statements.
The uncertainty surrounding TikTok’s future has driven many users, especially younger ones, to
explore alternatives such as the Chinese app RedNote. Meanwhile, shares of Meta and Snap have
seen an uptick this month, with investors betting on an influx of users and advertising revenue in
light of the potential TikTok ban.
This situation underscores the complex interplay between national security, international
business, and social media’s role in modern communication, with the outcomes potentially
affecting millions of users and reshaping the digital landscape in the U.S.
