We’ve more on Biden’s comments on a humanitarian “pause” in Gaza.
He made the comments in Minneapolis on Wednesday night after he was interrupted in the midst of a campaign speech.
“Mr President, if you care about Jewish people, as a rabbi, I need you to call for a ceasefire,” a woman stood up and shouted.
“I think we need a pause,” Biden replied.
Biden went on to say he understood the emotions motivating the woman who was quickly shouted down by others in the room and taken away. She later identified herself to reporters as Rabbi Jessica Rosenberg.
When asked what a pause meant, Biden said it was “time to get the prisoners out” – a reference to the captives held by Hamas, the White House later clarified.
He then continued: “This is incredibly complicated for the Israelis. It’s incredibly complicated for the Muslim world as well. … I supported a two-state solution. I have from the very beginning.
The Associated Press news agency says Biden’s reference to a “pause” is a “subtle departure” for the administration, which has been insisting since the war began that they will not tell the Israelis how to conduct their military operations.
