A Snowstorm, the Strongest in 10 Years, Hits the United States
Washington D.C., January 5, 2025 – A monumental winter storm, described by the National
Oceanic and Atmospheric Administration (NOAA) as potentially the fiercest in the last decade, has
begun to sweep across the United States.
According to CNN, this storm could bring unprecedented challenges to states like Kansas,
Missouri, Illinois, Indiana, and Kentucky, where it’s expected to be the most severe in ten years.
The National Weather Service reported that major roads in parts of Kansas and Indiana were
blanketed with snow and ice, leading to the deployment of the National Guard to assist stranded
motorists.
Forecasts indicate at least eight inches of snow could fall, especially north of Interstate 70, with
winter storm warnings issued from Kansas and Missouri to New Jersey, effective until Monday.
In response to the looming blizzard,
Washington D.C. declared a state of emergency on Sunday, which is set to last through January 7th. The capital has already seen partial shortages in grocery stores due to residents stocking up in preparation for the storm.
All vehicle owners have been advised to immediately move their cars from emergency service
lanes to avoid having them forcibly removed.
CNN previously highlighted that this severe winter storm threatens about 62 million people
across central and eastern U.S., with forecasts predicting heavy snow, dangerous ice
accumulations, heavy rain, and severe thunderstorms.
This weather event is expected to impact at least 12 states, potentially leading to widespread
power outages. Even in typically warmer states, heavy rainfall and severe thunderstorms could be
expected.
