Syria Calls for Complete Lifting of Sanctions After the Cause for Their Imposition Has Ceased
Syria’s Ministry of Foreign Affairs and Expatriates has emphasized that economic sanctions are
now targeting the Syrian people since the reason for their imposition has vanished, calling for
their full removal.
In a statement, the ministry said, “We welcome the exemptions and exceptions related to the
economic sanctions imposed on Syria, which were issued by the U.S. administration.”
It added, “We have achieved this progress as a result of the intensive sessions we held recently,
and we thank all the wonderful Syrian cadres who have made a significant effort in this regard.”
The ministry stressed that “economic sanctions are now targeting the Syrian people after the
cause for which they were imposed has ceased, and their complete removal has become essential
to drive recovery in Syria, achieve stability, and prosperity.”
On Monday evening, the U.S. Department of the Treasury issued a general license until July 7,
2025, allowing transactions with the new Syrian government, including “the sale, supply, storage,
or donation of energy,” as well as “the transfer of non-commercial personal remittances to Syria,
including through the Central Bank of Syria.”
