Santa Ana Winds Worsen Los Angeles Situation, Thousands Experience Power Outages
The Santa Ana winds have significantly complicated the situation in Southern California, particularly in Los Angeles, where they’ve led to power outages for tens of thousands of residents. On Tuesday, millions faced renewed warnings of forest fires, as strong winds fanned flames from massive wildfires that have been raging since last week.
The “Santa Ana” winds, which started sweeping through the mountains before sunrise, are expected to continue with enough strength to carry burning embers over long distances, potentially sparking new fires across the region. These winds have already claimed at least 24 lives.
Kristin Crowley, Los Angeles City Fire Chief, stated in a press conference, “The destructive, life-
threatening, and widespread winds have arrived.” Most of Southern California is under a high fire
risk, with crews on high alert across a 300-mile stretch from San Diego to north of Los Angeles.
The inland areas north of Los Angeles, including cities like Thousand Oaks, Northridge, and Simi
Valley, home to over 300,000 people, are among the most at risk according to weather experts.
Power was cut to approximately 90,000 homes to prevent power lines from sparking new fires.
The wildfires have caused the destruction or damage of more than 12,000 structures,
transforming entire neighborhoods into ash and piles of rubble.
