Jake Sullivan Warns of Iran’s Weakness and Its Nuclear Implications
On Tuesday, U.S. National Security Advisor Jake Sullivan stated that Iran is currently at its weakest point since the establishment of the republic in 1979. Sullivan explained that this weakness could be a source of concern as it might push Iran to reconsider its position on nuclear weapons.
Sullivan made these remarks alongside incoming National Security Advisor Mike Waltz during a ceremony for the handover of duties. He emphasized, “We need to discuss the future and effectiveness of UN peacekeeping forces in Lebanon.”
Furthermore, Sullivan expressed hope for concluding the Gaza hostage deal this week.
Military Activities Near Nuclear Sites
On Sunday, Iran conducted military exercises near its nuclear facilities in the west and central parts of the country, according to the Iranian news agency IRNA. These military maneuvers come amidst escalating tensions over Iran’s nuclear program, just weeks before the return of U.S. President Donald Trump to the White House on January 20.
IRNA reported on Sunday, “The joint maneuvers of the Iranian Army’s Air Defense Force began this morning in Iran’s western and northern regions, specifically around Fordow (central) and Khondab (west),” where the Arak reactor is located.
Fordow, a fortified facility nestled in the mountains near the city of Qom, is one of Iran’s key uranium enrichment sites.
Increased Nuclear Tensions
Tensions have been mounting regarding Iran’s nuclear program since Washington withdrew from the nuclear deal during Trump’s first term, which had promised sanctions relief in exchange for curbing Iran’s nuclear ambitions. In response, Iran has intensified its nuclear activities, gradually abandoning its commitments under the agreement.
