Doomsday Clock Moves One Second Closer to Midnight Amid Climate and Nuclear Threats
In response to the escalating threats of climate change, nuclear risks, and misinformation, the symbolic
“Doomsday Clock” has been adjusted to 89 seconds to midnight, signaling the closest humanity has ever
been to a global catastrophe. This adjustment was announced yesterday by the Bulletin of the Atomic
Scientists, who have been responsible for setting the clock’s time since its inception in 1947.
Former Colombian President and current head of “The Elders,” Juan Manuel Santos, stated that “the
Doomsday Clock has never been closer to midnight than it is now.” During a press conference in
Washington, he emphasized, “The clock speaks to the existential threats we face, and the need for unity
and bold leadership to turn back the hands of time.”
This year’s setting comes a week after Donald Trump’s inauguration, who has been noted by AFP for
breaking norms in international cooperation. Santos acknowledged Trump’s promises of using
diplomacy with Russia and China but criticized his withdrawal from the Paris Climate Agreement and
the World Health Organization.
Experts also warned about the worsening impact of climate change on the planet following another year
of record-breaking temperatures. Santos called for “urgent action” to combat misinformation and the
widespread conspiracy theories in our highly interconnected world, stating, “This alarming increase in
distrust is largely driven by the malicious and reckless use of technologies we do not yet fully
understand.”

The Doomsday Clock was last adjusted in 2023, moving 10 seconds closer to midnight to 90 seconds, in
response to Russia’s invasion of Ukraine. Sometimes referred to as the “Apocalypse Clock,” it was
established in 1947 to reflect the nuclear dangers and the growing tensions between the superpowers of
World War II.
Initially set at seven minutes to midnight, the criteria for adjusting the clock have expanded over the
years to include pandemics, climate crises, and governmental disinformation campaigns, reflecting the
multifaceted nature of modern existential threats.
Conclusion:
As we stand perilously close to midnight on the Doomsday Clock, it’s imperative for global leaders and
individuals alike to take decisive action against these looming threats. The clock serves as a stark
reminder of our collective responsibility to ensure a sustainable and peaceful future.
