Turkish and British Officials Discuss Syria’s Future in Ankara Talks
A Turkish Foreign Ministry source revealed that officials from Turkey and Britain will address Syria’s future during a meeting in Ankara on Monday. The talks will cover security, sanctions, and economic development amid shifting regional dynamics.
Turkey, a NATO member, has been a key supporter of the Syrian opposition against Bashar al-Assad for years. Following Assad’s ousting last year, Turkey has forged close ties with Syria’s new administration in Damascus, pledging support for reconstruction and offering to train and equip its security forces. Meanwhile, Britain announced last month that it would adjust sanctions on Syria post-Assad but maintain asset freezes and travel bans on former regime members.
The Turkish source, speaking anonymously, said Monday’s discussions will be led by Turkish Deputy Foreign Minister Nuh Yılmaz and British Foreign Office Minister of State Hamish Faulkner. Yılmaz is expected to emphasize the need to lift sanctions on Syria unconditionally to enable reconstruction and economic growth. The source added that Yılmaz will also stress “the importance of international support for the Syrian administration’s steps toward national reconciliation under a centralized government” and push for “an end to Israel’s actions that openly violate and threaten Syrian sovereignty.”
