Swedish police announced on Wednesday that they are investigating a shooting incident that targeted the Israeli Embassy in Stockholm on Tuesday evening.
The police reported hearing gunfire on a street near the embassy, located in central Stockholm. Rebecca Landberg, a media officer for Stockholm police, told AFP that they “found evidence indicating that the Israeli Embassy was targeted by gunfire.” However, she added that no further details would be disclosed due to the ongoing investigation. The police statement confirmed visible marks on the building as a result of the shooting.
Ongoing Investigation with No Arrests
No arrests have been made yet in connection to the incident, though the area is equipped with multiple surveillance cameras, which the police are currently reviewing to gather evidence.
This is not the first incident involving the Israeli Embassy in Stockholm. Since the start of the conflict between Israel and Hamas on October 7, 2024, several similar incidents have occurred. In January 2024, an explosive device was found on embassy grounds, and another shooting incident took place near the embassy in May. Fortunately, no injuries were reported in either of these incidents.
Rising Tensions Amid Gaza Conflict
In May, Swedish intelligence services reported that Iran was recruiting members of Swedish criminal gangs to carry out acts of violence against Israeli targets, a claim that Tehran has denied.
This recent shooting near the Israeli Embassy coincides with escalating tensions, as Israel has announced a “limited” ground incursion targeting Hezbollah’s infrastructure in southern Lebanon, while Iran launched hundreds of rockets at Israel in retaliation for recent assassinations.
