US Might Buy Resources from Russia and China if Tariffs Imposed on Canada
In a recent statement, Canadian Prime Minister Justin Trudeau warned that the United States might have to source resources from Russia, China, and Venezuela if President Donald Trump decides to impose tariffs on all Canadian goods.
Trudeau told reporters, “President Trump has announced his intention to ensure a ‘golden era’ for the United States, which will require more steel and aluminum, more critical minerals, and more reliable and reasonably priced energy.”
He added, “All these resources are available in Canada, and we are ready to work with the United States to build a prosperous and secure economy in North America,” emphasizing that “their alternative would be to buy more resources from Russia or China or Venezuela.”
Trudeau stressed that Canada would respond to any U.S. decision regarding tariffs, stating, “All options are on the table.” He also mentioned that Canada might impose retaliatory tariffs on American goods if Washington decides to increase tariffs on Canadian imports.
This statement comes amidst escalating trade tensions between the two countries, with Canada aiming to protect its economic interests against any U.S. actions that could affect its trade.
During his inauguration, Trump confirmed that tariffs are on the horizon, suggesting that foreign countries would pay these tariffs, although typically, these taxes are paid by domestic importers and often passed on to consumers.
On her part, Canadian Foreign Minister Melanie Joly stated that Canada “will continue working to prevent the imposition of tariffs,” but she also confirmed that she is preparing contingency plans for a response.
