America Considers Egypt’s Gaza Plan a “First Goodwill Step”
The US envoy to the Middle East, Steve Witkoff, praised Egypt on Thursday for proposing a plan to rebuild Gaza, calling it a “first goodwill step” from the Egyptians. While Witkoff welcomed the initiative, he stopped short of endorsing its specifics, emphasizing the need for further discussion.
Egypt’s ambitious proposal, an alternative to former U.S. President Donald Trump’s plan that involved American control over the Palestinian enclave and the displacement of its residents, has sparked international attention. Witkoff noted, “It’s essential to have more dialogue about this plan,” acknowledging its positive start.

Egypt’s $53 Billion Reconstruction Vision
Egypt unveiled a bold $53 billion plan to reconstruct Gaza, backed by full Arab support and coordinated with international stakeholders. The initiative aims to rebuild the war-torn region while prioritizing the prevention of forced displacement of its population.
The project will unfold in two main phases:
- Early Recovery Phase: Lasting six months, this stage involves clearing approximately 50 million tons of rubble, installing temporary housing, and restoring 60,000 partially damaged residential units.
- Reconstruction Phase: Spanning five years, this phase will focus on long-term rebuilding efforts to restore Gaza’s infrastructure and communities.
A Step Toward Stability
Egypt’s proposal comes as a response to the devastation caused by the latest conflict in Gaza. Unlike previous plans, it emphasizes sustainable recovery over displacement, aligning with regional and global calls for a humanitarian approach.
