Iranian Foreign Minister Hossein Amirabdollahian reaffirmed the country’s support for the efforts to elect a new president in Lebanon, whose stability he said would benefit the entire region.
In a meeting with Lebanese Parliament Speaker Nabih Berri, held in Beirut on Friday, Foreign Minister Amirabdollahian said stability and security in Lebanon have critical importance for Iran and the whole region.
Highlighting the significance of election of a new president and the formation of government in Lebanon, the Iranian foreign minister said the issue comes only within the purview of the Lebanese nation and political leaders.
He also reiterated Iran’s support for the efforts by Nabih Berri and the political currents of Lebanon at the election of a new president.
Amirabdollahian then pointed to the regional developments, saying Iran has a positive evaluation of the restoration of relations with Saudi Arabia.
He also stated that closer ties between Tehran and Riyadh will positively affect the regional developments.
For his part, Berri described the selection of new president as a matter of paramount importance to Lebanon, saying efforts are underway to work out a compromise among the Lebanese parties over the issue.
Describing Lebanon as a wealthy state, the parliament speaker said his country will be able to weather the critical economic conditions immediately if a new president is elected.
He also noted that the main purpose behind the pressures on Lebanon is to target the resistance front, which he described as a supporter of Lebanon against the threats.
The parliament speaker finally hailed the improvement of relations between Iran and Saudi Arabia, saying closer relations between the two heavyweights will benefit the whole region.
