Gemma Connell, a representative of the UN Office for the Coordination of Humanitarian Affairs (OCHA), tells Al Jazeera from Rafah that several thousand doses of critically required vaccines have arrived in Gaza.
“Now, the challenge is how we get those vaccines to every baby who needs it because we have the babies being born here in Rafah, but we also have babies born in Jabalia, which is an area that is essentially besieged and cut off from the outside world,” she said.
She said: “The health services are struggling to keep up because they are dealing every day with trauma cases that are coming in because of the continuation of this war.”
“That means things like doing a vaccination or even treating someone with cancer has become an impossible task,” Connell added. “… The war must end because the babies who are being born and the mothers who are giving birth to them should not be confronted with this.”
