Upcoming National Conference to Shape the Future Phase in Syria
Syria is preparing for a landmark event with the announcement of a national conference, described as the first of its kind, aimed at drafting the contours of the country’s next phase. Foreign Minister Asaad al-Shibani, during a joint press conference with his Italian counterpart Antonio Tajani on Friday, emphasized the inclusive nature of the conference, stating it would bring together all Syrians to ensure a comprehensive formulation of the upcoming stages.
Al-Shibani highlighted
That the national conference would work towards achieving a smooth and inclusive political transition of power, involving everyone and ensuring accountability for all criminals and those involved in crimes against the Syrian people. He stressed, “We affirm our commitment to principles and values that promote freedom for all Syrians, regardless of their sectarian, ethnic or religious affiliations, within the framework of law and citizenship. Ensuring these rights forms the fundamental pillar of Syrian unity and stability, which positively reflects on the region,” according to the Syrian Arab News Agency (SANA).
He also noted that the new Syrian leadership aims to turn the page on the practices of the
previous regime, including the spread of drugs and chaos in the region, with aspirations to make
Syria a model of stability, prosperity, and peace. Al-Shibani announced that he would lead a high-
level Syrian delegation on visits to several European countries to enhance partnerships and
cooperation across all fields.
Concluding his speech, Al-Shibani invited global delegations and companies to launch more
initiatives and partnerships on Syrian soil.
Meanwhile, Italian Foreign Minister Antonio Tajani, on the same day, called for a suspension of
the European Union sanctions on Syria for six months to a year. However, he clarified that any
final decision on this matter could only be made collectively by the EU.
This planned conference and the discussions around EU sanctions highlight a significant shift in
the political landscape of Syria, aiming towards a new era of governance, stability, and
international engagement.
