Trump Calls for Canada to Become the 51st US State
On Sunday, U.S. President Donald Trump renewed his call for Canada to become an American state, further straining relations with one of its key allies after imposing hefty tariffs. According to statements reported by AFP, Trump argued that the United States spends “hundreds of billions of dollars supporting Canada,” seemingly referring to the trade deficit with its northern neighbor.
Trump further claimed, “Without this massive support, Canada wouldn’t exist as a viable country,” and added, “Therefore, Canada should become our cherished 51st state.”
On Saturday, Trump imposed tariffs on major U.S. trade partners, including Canada, Mexico, and China. The White House announced that tariffs would be set at 25% on Canadian and Mexican imports, with a 10% rate specifically on Canadian energy resources. These measures are contingent on both countries “working with the United States to combat drug trafficking and immigration.”
Additionally, the White House stated that Chinese imports would be subject to a 10% tariff, on top of existing customs duties.
This isn’t the first time Trump has stirred controversy regarding Canada. On January 23, he reiterated his provocative statements, asserting that the U.S. does not need Canadian oil, gas, cars, or lumber, indicating his desire to annex Canada as the 51st state of America.
