Egyptian-Turkish Agreements on Regional Issues Led by Gaza and Syria
Egypt and Turkey have issued a joint statement highlighting numerous agreements on the situations in
the region, particularly focusing on the Gaza Strip and developments in Syria.
In Ankara, the capital of Turkey, Egyptian Foreign Minister Badr Abdelati and his Turkish counterpart
Hakan Fidan held a consultation session discussing bilateral relations and regional issues of common
interest. This meeting resulted in a shared declaration.
The Foreign Ministers emphasized their commitment to addressing the root causes of instability in the Middle East by advocating for a just and lasting peace between Palestine and Israel. This peace is to be based on international law, UN resolutions, and the two-state solution, specifically establishing a Palestinian state along the lines of June 4, 1967, with East Jerusalem as its capital.
Both ministers reaffirmed their determination to preserve Syria’s unity, sovereignty, and territorial integrity, ensuring Syrian lands do not pose a threat to any state. They also recognized the importance of a comprehensive political process serving the interests of the Syrian people.
The statement highlighted a mutual understanding on the voluntary and dignified return of Syrian refugees to their homeland, the fight against terrorism, and maintaining good neighborly relations with regional countries.
The joint statement reaffirmed their commitment to support Somalia’s sovereignty, unity, and territorial integrity, alongside backing the federal government in achieving security and stability.
Expressing concern over the ongoing conflict in Sudan, leading to catastrophic humanitarian consequences, the ministers praised the transitional Sudanese Sovereignty Council’s decision to establish humanitarian zones for aid access and distribution.
The declaration also committed to supporting a UN-led, Libyan-owned political process aimed at preserving Libya’s political unity, security, stability, sovereignty, and territorial integrity.
Both ministers committed to supporting coordinated international efforts to combat terrorism in all its forms, addressing its ideological roots and preventing the cross-border movement of terrorist elements.
The statement stressed the importance of intensified collective efforts by the international community to alleviate suffering in Gaza through increased humanitarian aid and committed to rebuilding the Strip without displacing Palestinians from their lands.
The Foreign Ministers called on international donors to actively participate in the expected reconstruction conference hosted by Egypt, focusing on the dire humanitarian consequences of the war in Gaza.
Lastly:
the joint statement underscored the vital role of UNRWA in supporting Palestinian refugees in the occupied Palestinian territories, condemning any Israeli decisions undermining UNRWA’s operations.
