Trump Plans to Withdraw US Forces from Northern Syria
Robert F. Kennedy Jr., a close ally of the newly elected President Donald Trump, stated that Trump intends to withdraw American forces from northeastern Syria.
In an interview on Fox News with host Tucker Carlson during live election coverage on Wednesday, November 6, Robert mentioned that President Trump expressed his intentions to pull his troops out of northeastern Syria during a flight.
Kennedy, who is expected to play a significant role in Trump’s administration, added, “We were talking about the Middle East, and Trump took a piece of paper and drew a map of the Middle East with all the countries on it, something most Americans couldn’t do.”
According to Kennedy, Trump specifically looked at the border between Syria and Turkey and said, “We have 500 soldiers at the Syrian-Turkish border, and a small camp that got shelled.”
Kennedy relayed that Trump told him there are 750,000 troops in Turkey and 250,000 in Syria, though it wasn’t specified whether he was referring to the Syrian army, the Syrian Democratic Forces, or a combination of both.
Trump then remarked to him:
“If they fight each other, we’ll be in the middle, we’ll become cannon fodder if fighting breaks out between the conflicting parties,” concluding with, “Get them out,” referring to the US forces in Syria.
Robert F. Kennedy Jr. had been running as an independent candidate for the US presidency but
withdrew his candidacy in favor of Trump.
During his first term in 2018, Trump announced on December 19 that he would withdraw his
forces from all Syrian territories, considering that they had achieved their goal of “defeating” ISIS.
Just one day later, Defense Secretary James Mattis resigned. Two weeks after, officials in Washington said Trump had reversed his decision and opted to extend the withdrawal plan.
At the end of last year, the US Senate overwhelmingly rejected a resolution calling for President
Joe Biden’s administration to withdraw American forces from northeastern Syria. The vote against the resolution, introduced by Republican Senator Rand Paul, was 84 to 13.
Currently, the number of US troops in Syria is estimated at 1000.
