Scientists from Nagoya University in Japan have announced a potentially revolutionary discovery in hair care. They found that the antioxidant “Luteolin” can halt graying, following experiments conducted on mice.
Although human studies have not yet begun, scientists believe this compound could have a similar effect on humans.
Luteolin is found in many vegetables such as celery, broccoli, carrots, onions, and peppers, making it easily accessible.
Professor Masashi Kato, leading the research team, stated that “the study results were surprising,” emphasizing Luteolin’s unique potential in preventing gray hair.
He added, “These results suggest that Luteolin may have significant medical effects in preventing the appearance of gray hair.”
How Does Luteolin Work?
Gray hair appears due to the loss of pigment-producing cells in hair follicles as we age, leading to colorless hair growth. Studies have shown that Luteolin effectively prevents this change.
In the experiment, mice were given one of three antioxidants, with Luteolin showing a potent effect in maintaining natural hair color. However, this effect was not linked to the hair growth cycle itself but
rather to Luteolin’s influence on hair pigmentation.
Professor Kato remarked, “This discovery makes Luteolin a promising candidate for preventing age-
related graying.”
Promising Results
Although the experiments were conducted only on mice, scientists point out that the process of graying
in humans is similar to that in mice, which strengthens hopes for developing an effective treatment for
gray hair in the near future.
Researchers believe Luteolin might have anti-aging effects that could extend to other issues like age-
related hair loss.
Dr. Takumi Kagawa, a researcher involved in the study, said, “It’s interesting to study whether Luteolin
could help address other age-related issues like hair loss.”
