Ronaldo on the Thousandth Goal: “It’s No Longer an Obsession
Cristiano Ronaldo, the Portuguese star and captain of Saudi club Al Nassr, has expressed his acceptance of potentially not reaching the 1000th goal in his illustrious football career, especially as he approaches his 40th birthday.
This statement came during a ceremony where he was honored with the “Platinum Quinas” award by the Portuguese Football Federation, in recognition of his remarkable journey with the Portuguese national team, where he has played in 216 matches.
Ronaldo mentioned that the idea of reaching 1000 goals was part of his ambitions, having previously declared his determination to achieve this number. Despite scoring his 900th goal in September against Croatia, he now admits to living “day by day,” focusing more on savoring every moment on the pitch.
He emphasized being content with what he has accomplished so far, considering reaching 1000
goals merely an additional achievement rather than a critical goal.
“I’m happy with being the top scorer in football history,” he remarked. “If I reach 1000, great, if not, I’m still happy.”
Ronaldo has indeed scored 10 goals this season for Al Nassr, further adding to his tally which now
stands at 908 goals, surpassing Lionel Messi, who has 850 goals to his name.
He expressed immense pride in representing his country, considering playing for the Portuguese
national team as the pinnacle of his career achievements, emphasizing his pride in his nation, its
culture, and its vast potential.
Ronaldo highlighted his special pride in all he has achieved with the national team since his
international career began at the age of 18, mentioning how his ambition evolved from playing in
his first international match to reaching milestones of 50, 100, and finally 200 international
appearances, a figure he sees as a distinguished mark for any player.
In concluding his speech, he affirmed that Portugal, despite its small size, boasts exceptional
qualities, infrastructure, and coaches, urging everyone to have confidence in this great country’s
capabilities.
