Decentralization and Syria’s Democratic Reconstruction: SDC Discusses with Sheikh Hikmat Al-Hajri
In a significant meeting, a delegation from the Kurdish Democratic Council of Syria (SDC) met with Sheikh Hikmat Al-Hajri, the spiritual leader of the Druze community in the Sweida province, to discuss the current situation in Syria, its future, including the structure of the state, and conditions for handing over weapons to the government.
According to an SDC statement, both parties emphasized the necessity of maintaining civil peace and avoiding a return to cycles of violence and conflict. They stressed the importance of Syrian territorial integrity.
The statement further detailed that the meeting also touched upon the need for the future state to be based on “the principle of equal citizenship and separation of powers, with an emphasis on the separation of religion from the state to ensure the neutrality and fairness of governmental institutions towards all citizens.”
The attendees praised the “Self-Administration” experience as a model of decentralization, considering it a living example that could be built upon to achieve decentralization in the Syrian state, ensuring fair representation of all regions and components.
They acknowledged the necessity of handing over weapons to the Syrian state, represented by authorized legal entities, but only after the formation of a comprehensive transitional government and the complete cessation of fighting across Syrian geography.
