US Defense Secretary: Our Plans to End Ukraine War “Not Betrayal”
The US Secretary of Defense, Pete Hegseth, defended President Donald Trump’s planned negotiations with Russian President Vladimir Putin to achieve peace in Ukraine. Speaking on the sidelines of a NATO defense ministers’ meeting in Brussels, Hegseth stated, “This is certainly not betrayal.”
He emphasized that no country has supported Ukraine more than the United States. Hegseth added, “There’s an understanding that the entire world, including the United States, is interested and desires peace, peace through negotiation, which will require both sides to acknowledge things they do not want.”
Hegseth also noted that Trump alone can bring both sides to the table for peace talks.
In an unprecedented move since the onset of the war in Ukraine in 2022, President Trump announced he has begun serious efforts to end the conflict between Russia and Ukraine. This followed an extended phone call between Trump and Putin, where Trump confirmed an agreement with Putin on the urgent need to end the war. Trump has declared he will meet Putin in Saudi Arabia to put an end to the bloodshed in what he described as this “catastrophic and brutal war.”
